Irving Penn

Irving Penn, Al Pacino

I have been looking at the work of Irving Penn for inspiration for my still life project. I have mainly been looking at his portrait lighting scenario. He lights the model from the left and the background from the right. This gives a dark light, dark light effect on the image. The benefits of this lighting are that it really highlights and draws attention to the shape of the face and shows the textures of the skin really well. This is something I feel would work well in still life. I am thinking of using an object such as a pineapple, so this lighting should work well.
